The Poems Prayers and Promises Picnic 2011

Saturday 27th August 2011, at Dersingham in Norfolk

This year’s picnic (P.P.P.P.) will take place on Saturday 27th August 2011 at the John Denver Bench in Natural England Dersingham National Nature Reserve, Norfolk.

Again the bi-annual Wolferton Scarecrow Festival is on the same weekend as the picnic.

We will meet at the main Scarecrow Festival car park at Wolferton at 11.30am. After all meeting up we will walk around part of the village to see the scarecrows & off up to the nature reserve to the John Denver Bench for the picnic. After lunch we will retrace our steps back in to the village & complete the circular walk around the scarecrow event. The small village is right next to the nature reserve, so this will not be a big walk. We would say you will only walk about 3 miles (including the circular walk around the village event) on the day.

John's BenchThere is a charge for the scarecrow event, with the car parking, but there is lots to see & do etc. There will be toilets & refreshments in the village. There is also a small free car park just before the village for the nature reserve.

For those who wish to just come for the picnic & not do the first part of the walk we will meet at the John Denver Bench at 12.30pm.

During the afternoon, there will be chance to walk around the nature reserve. John often spoke of habitat & how important it was to have the right habitat for the wildlife. Over the years, Nature England have created this habitat for the local wildlife with great success for Marsh Harriers, Buzzards, Nightjar's Dragonflies & Damselflies etc. With the wardens & volunteers, the work is still ongoing.

There may be time between the end of the picnic & tea time to visit Heacham beach if you wish. We will see on the day, weather permitting, see what the majority of friends would like to do etc.

At around 5.00pm we will meet up at our home in Heacham for a fish & chip tea. If you could please give us your order for your fish & chips in advance, we can ring the order through a couple of days before to save us a lot of time etc, thank you.

After tea we will have a John Denver sing a long as usual. We aim to finish around 9.00pm.

Things to remember on the day.

You need to bring with you a packed lunch with a drink for the picnic, good footwear, a light coat in case of rain, suntan cream, camera & maybe binoculars, bird book, nature book.

There is a fee for the car park & scarecrow event.

There are no toilets at the nature reserve, but there are toilets in the village.

Please remember to order your fish & chips (other normal fish & chip shop items available of course) a week before the event. We will ring the order through the day before & pick them up from the village after 5.00pm.

We will provide tea, coffee & soft drinks at our home in Heacham.

If you want to provide your own evening meal, that would be fine.

Once you have confirmed you are attending the P.P.P.P., we will give you Val's mobile number for if you need to contact us on the day.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you want directions or any more information about the picnic or walk etc.

We hope to have fine weather & a day of friendship remembering the life of John Denver.
