The Windstar Foundation

Windstar

Windstar www.wstar.org is a non profit environmental education organization which was founded in 1976 by John, along with Aikido Master Tom Crum, in fulfilment of a dream John had had since childhood. A larger than life-size bronze statue of John, entitled Spirit, now stands on the Windstar land and we have an inscribed brick at its base. Windstar promotes a holistic approach to addressing environmental concerns. It is the recognition and demonstration that each of us is part of, and responsible for, the quality of life on planet Earth; and that which affects any one of us, affects us all.

We have recently contributed towards the Two Hearts Cabin Restoration Project, a joint venture between the Windstar Foundation, the Windstar Colorado Connection, and the Murie Center www.muriecenter.org The Windstar Colorado Connection is leading this fundraising effort to secure the necessary funds for the interior restoration of the Pump House cabin on the historic Murie Ranch, located inside Grand Teton National Park.

The Murie Ranch was the home to renowned environmentalists Olaus and Mardy Murie, and it was there that the Wilderness Act and the modern conservation movement were born. Today the Murie Center non-profit organization carries forth the values of Olaus and Mardy as expressed in the mission statement: “The Murie Center inspires people to act mindfully on behalf of wild nature. We explore the value of nature and its connection to the human spirit.” John Denver was drawn to this philosophy and had great respect and admiration for the work of Olaus and Mardy Murie. In fact, Mardy was instrumental in inspiring John and The Windstar Foundation’s support and efforts to help preserve the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. John later wrote A Song For all Lovers for Mardy.

The Pump House cabin is one of about a dozen cabins on the historic Murie Ranch undergoing restoration, and when John Denver visited the Murie Ranch he stayed in the Pump House cabin. The most exciting part is that the cabin’s interior will be dedicated to John, and will honor the friendship, love, and respect between John and Mardy and will align the common interests and spirit of The Windstar Foundation and the Murie Center.
